In the sinful city of Heyang, very well-liked Pan Yue married Yang Caiwei, who was despised by everyone. However, Yang Caiwei was murdered on their wedding day. The suspected culprit was none other than Pan Yue. Reborn from death, Yang Caiwei was under the guise of the "wicked woman" Shangguan Zhi. She returned with a fierce demeanor, intending to expose Pan Yue's true colors. As they bravely confronted the Four Major Clans and uncovered the old cases, their hearts drew closer once more. Yang Caiwei discovered that the true culprit was not Pan Yue, who had loved her deeply all along. Just as things seemed to be falling into place, the mastermind behind the scenes set another trap, pushing them into the abyss of despair.

After ten years of non-stop searching, Pan Yue finally found his childhood crush Yang Cai Wei who was now an undertaker. They decided to find out the truth behind the extermination of Li Mansion together.

Together, Pan Yue and Yang Cai Wei solve the murder of the Li family. Pan Yue declares his marriage to Cai Wei, who believes he is only fulfilling the marriage contract obligation that was agreed upon by their families when they were kids. Shangguan Zhi, madly in love with Pan Yue, learns about his impending marriage and schemes to do something about it.

Cai Wei (in the body of Shangguan Zhi) witnesses Shangguan Zhi’s death (in the body of Cai Wei). She wakes up after a 1-month coma and reaches out to Xiao Sheng to help find the whereabouts of her master. Pan Yue returns to Heyang as the new local magistrate and Prince Consort, with rumors swirling that he killed his bride, Cai Wei. Both he and the real Cai Wei want to find out who murdered his bride, with both suspecting each other.

Pan Yue makes his first arrest as the county magistrate and makes enemies with the 4 powerful houses that rule the county. In Cai Wei’s attempts to gather information about Shangguan Zhi’s death, Pan Yue becomes more suspicious of her. Pan Yue tracks down Shangguan Zhi’s carriage and begins to poke holes in Cai Wei’s story of being kidnapped by bandits.

Cai Wei is able to quell Pan Yue’s suspicions about her for the time being. The young master of the Silver Rain Terrace arrives and wreaks havoc by accusing Pan Yue of killing his wife, giving him 7 days to figure out the cause of her death. Cai Wei doubles down on finding Shangguan Zhi’s body so she can do an autopsy and find the cause of death.

Cai Wei discovers Shangguan Zhi’s body and attributes her cause of death to a thin, gold needle. Suspecting Pan Yue used the needle to kill Shangguan, she keeps this information to herself and then goes in search of the manufacturer of the needle.

The trail of the gold needle leads them to the Life and Death House, where Cai Wei and Pan Yue assume the identities of two patrons. Cai Wai makes a scene to lure out the murderer, but he commits suicide before they can determine the mastermind. Pan Yue is framed for killing Cai Sheng’s concubine, so he and Cai Wei are targeted and surrounded by Cai Sheng’s men.

Pan Yue makes a bet with Cai Sheng that he and Cai Wei will be able to escape Life and Death House. Pan Yue begins to see Cai Wei in Shangguan Zhi, but he forces himself to purge those thoughts from his mind. Cai Wei resolves to move on from Pan Yue even though she sees how much he loved her. At the 7th day of finding Cai Wei’s murderer, Master Zhuo makes a surprise appearance.

Master Lan Jiang Zhuo, bent on finding Cai Wei’s murderer, picks up on her cues and decides not to pursue further. In order to protect her, he proposes marriage at the county magistrate’s office. Cai Wei and Pan Yue re-open old, unsolved cases to find out more about the Ripple organization, whose token they found on the Shangguan’s murderer’s body.

Cai Wei and Pan Yue begin investigating an old case concerning deaths happening around the time of the Lantern Festival, rumored to be caused by a Wyvern deity. They interview the acquaintances of the deceased and suddenly start seeing similar deaths happen by the riverbank. They suspect the new deaths are to instill fear among the people so they get pressured to stop the investigation.

Cai Wei and Pan Yue find more evidence about the case, leading them to a decomposed body. Cai Wei uses her skills to determine the cause of death and weapon used, which points to the leader of Relief House. Master Zhuo’s investigation also brings him to the same conclusion.

Though Gu Yong does indeed own the Blood sword, matching the description of the murder weapon, his right hand is rendered useless, and the murders were committed by a left-handed person. Cai Wei, Pan Yue, and Master Zhuo return to Relief House for more clues. While Master Zhuo stalls Gu Yong, Cai Wei’s and Pan Yue’s investigation leads them to a room that triggers Pan Yue’s panic attack.

Trapped in the dungeon where Gu Yong kept his son, Gu Shan, Cai Wei, and Pan Yue barely make it out alive when Gu Yong fills the room with smoke. They decide to resume the Lantern Festival to force Gu Shan out in the open. Assassins go after Master Zhuo and Xiao Sheng.

Xiao Sheng and Master Zhuo stay in hiding to mount a surprise attack on the Gold Water Sect, who are trying to assassinate Master Zhuo. Cai Wei recruits A Ze and then Constable Liu to feign abusive behavior so as to lure out Gu Shan, who seems to be targeting abusive people who are like his father. Cai Wei changes plans at the last minute, putting herself in danger.

While interrogating the captured Gu Shan, Pan Yue realizes he’s just an imposter, meant to throw them off the trail. Grasping the severity of the situation, Pan Yue desperately searches for Cai Wei, knowing the real Gu Shan is out to get her. He meets Master Zhuo along the way, who also aids the search for Cai Wei.

Gu Yong decides to reveal who is the leader of the Ripple organization if Pan Yue can guarantee his safety. However, a mole in the county magistrate’s office gets to Gu Yong before he can reveal anything. Fearing for Cai Wei’s safety, he tells her to back to her brother in the capital, while Master Zhuo offers his residence. Instead, Cai Wei decides to find a place on her own and continue her investigation of the Ripple organization.

Xiao Sheng gets in trouble with the Silver Rain Terrace but is saved by Master Zhuo and Shangguan Zhi. Shangguan Zhi makes it clear to Master Zhuo that she only sees him as her friend and nothing more. Pan Yue gets a lead on the Ripple pattern and begins investigating the old Ghost Fire case. After hearing an old rhyme that Cai Wei used to recite to him, he realizes that Shangguan Zhi is Cai Wei and quickly goes to her.

Pan Yue is about to tell Shangguan Zhi that he knows who she really is, but changes his mind, realizing that she will be targeted by the Ripple organization if they know her true identity. He and Cai Wei visit Xinzheng Academy for more clue and find a dead body in the forest. They try to determine the identity of the corpse, while Master Zhuo learns more about Xiao Sheng’s past.

Pan Yue makes a trip to Shen Ci’s hometown for more info and takes Cai Wei with him, hoping to tell her he knows her true identity. Master Zhuo unearth’s the spy in his organization and discovers there is a plan to assassinate Pan Yue and Cai Wei. Pan Yue begins to show his feelings for Cai Wei, but she still thinks he’s engaged to the princess.

Pan Yue reveals to Cai Wei that his betrothal to the princess is fake, so he can pursue the Ripple organization without being targeted. Though Cai Wei has feelings for him, she’s under the impression that he’s pursuing Shangguan Zhi and not her. Together, they uncover the Ghostly Fire mystery and exact justice for all involved. Master Zhuo asks Xiao Sheng for help and finally sees her dressed as a beautiful woman instead of a boy.
