The Wingfeather family escaped the Ice Prairies and is now sailing to Ban Rona, the last safe haven in Aerwiar. They are hoping for a place to mend and adjust to the reality of Kalmar’s transformation and Janner’s wounds.

The Wingfeather family settles in at Chimney Hill and the children choose their Guilds at school. Janner agrees to join the Durgan Guild to protect Kalmar. Rudric shocks them all with the news that a cloven is on the loose in the Hollows!

The children prove themselves at school and finally begin to feel settled. Rudric proves a loyal friend of the family, but danger still looms with livestock in town going missing. Janner discovers that Kalmar is sneaking out at night.

The annual Finnick Durga provides the Wingfeather kids the opportunity to showcase their skill. Rudric has gotten closer to Nia and is there to cheer the kids on. Grigory pushes Kalmar too far and Janner must stand up to him to protect his brother.

After the Finnick Durga, the Wingfeather kids find themselves in an uneasy peace. Rudric finds out Nia’s secret and the Durgans follow tracks in the snow and find Kalmar, Janner, and a cave full of bones.

After discovering that Kalmar has been caring for the cloven in a cave, the council banishes Kalmar and Nia from the Green Hollows. Suddenly, the cloven itself enters the keep. In the chaos, the children are kidnapped by a traitorous friend.

Esben transforms into a bear and saves Nia from the fangs. Reunited, they rush to save the children. Rudric mistakes Esben and mortally wounds him. Esben rescues the kids from Bonifer and then dies. Kalmar rallies the Hollowsfolk for war.
